What types of counseling are available?

Counseling services are somewhat different depending on the age of the person receiving services, or the specific people attending. Counseling can be provided for children, teens and adults. Counseling can also be provided one-on-one, or can include multiple family members including couples. Couples counseling is a specific focus of counseling services.

Counseling in McHenry includes individual counseling for adults, adolescents and children. Couples therapy and family counseling are also provided at this location.

What are the benefits of counseling?

Counseling helps you learn new ways to handle problems, builds your ability to manage stress, improves symptoms (such as depression) and can help improve family relationships. Counseling can also help us gain a better understanding of the underlying causes of our difficulties by providing objective feedback from a highly trained and licensed professional.

Some common benefits include:
– Improved communication skills and ability to connect with others
– Greater acceptance of ourselves and improved self-esteem
– Improved ability to manage difficult feelings and express them in healthy ways (e.g., anger, sadness, disappointment)
– Relief from depression, anxiety, or other mental health diagnoses

How is counseling different from medication?

Counseling is a unique tool that allows a therapist and a client to collaboratively identify areas of difficulty and then develop and practice ways to solve these problems. The counselor helps you add new tools to your toolbox of problem-solving skills. The client is working to develop long-term skills that they will be able to use across many different situations.

Medication can often be a helpful tool combined with counseling. Our offices that provide counseling in Chicago and counseling in McHenry have therapists that are able to help identify when medication is beneficial and make referrals to prescribers in the area.

How do I get started?

The best place to start is to participate in an evaluation by a mental health professional. They can help diagnose the problem, recommend a specific intervention (therapy, medications, or both), and answer questions about the process. If you have questions, and would like to speak to one of our mental health professionals, simply fill out our contact form and someone from the office will be in touch with you shortly. You can also contact us by phone at (815) 344-5061.
