Individual Counseling & Therapy
Finding an Individual Counselor can be an anxiety provoking venture. Counseling is different from other forms of healthcare in that the content of what is discussed is often more private, and requires a great deal of trust to disclose. We understand how difficult it can be to decide to begin individual therapy, and always strive to ensure that our patients feel that the therapist they choose is the right "fit" for them.Individual counseling at Meridian Behavioral Health is focused on providing tangible results, while staying focused on your long term health and growth. All of our therapists chose this profession because they care about people and their problems. When becoming involved with individual therapy at our clinic, you'll find our counselors warm, empathic and focused on alleviating the discomfort that brought you to us.
Our counselors are committed to working with the other caregivers in your life, such as your medical doctor, to help you get the most out of therapy.
"What happens in individual counseling?"
Counseling typically occurs in one 50 minute session each week. During that time, you and your therapist work together to make changes in your behavior, thought patterns, relationships or emotional functioning as a means of reducing your symptoms. Therapy focuses on thoughts, behaviors and relationship patterns that contribute to symptoms or distress. Practical skills taught to the individual help to promote new habits that are more likely to contribute to psychological well-being and health relationships. This may involve tasks that you work on during the week to make the most progress possible."What if I don't click with my therapist, or feel they are the right fit?"
We want you to find the right therapist for you. All of us at Meridian Behavioral Health understand that the relationship with the counselor is one of the most important aspects of individual therapy. If the fit isn't right, your therapist will want to see you placed with the right person. When people are seeking individual help, it is vital that they feel comfortable with the therapist they will be seeing. This is our main priority when helping you choose a therapist."How long does individual counseling take?"
This depends on the problems you are working on. Some issues can be improved in a few sessions, others may take many weeks or months to fully address. In the initial sessions of individual counseling, we try to give you a sense of what therapy will entail, and how long it will likely take."Can I bring a family member, even though I am looking for individual help?"
Absolutely. One of the best ways to make progress is to include your existing social support in the process. Having friends and family that are aware of your goals can help keep you moving in the right direction, and help your therapist with your between-session work goals. Even when your predominant goal is individual help, the occasional family session can often help you progress much faster in therapy. If you have any questions, or are interested in starting individual counseling, call our administrative staff to request an initial evaluation with a therapist.
